The "mystical" February in Istria often graces us with impressive misty scenarios through the rainy days. It is the peaceful time of intimacy and love, or sometimes of conscious loneliness. Retreating into the cosy home, we look out over the misted ocean and feel as lonely as if we were in a lighthouse. This inspired us to read the legendary and in some cases tragic stories about Istrian lighthouses, which we want to share with you today. Happy reading!

Lighthouse Sv. Ivan
This lighthouse was built in 1853 by the Austro-Hungarian authorities. The legend says a Venetian doge was sailing from Venice to Rovinj and spotted the dangerous cliffs of Sv. Ivan. The doge promised to Sv. Ivan to lit a candle as high as the highest tower in Rovinj if he guided him safely to the shore. After some time, the doge forgot about his promise to Sv. Ivan and never lit the candle. On his next trip from Venice to Rovinj, a storm surprised him in the same place, and he and his crew disappeared in the stormy sea. We will never know if this legend is true, but the underwater world of Sv. Ivan is very interesting to explore because of all the sunken ships.

Lighthouse Porer
Porer is the highest lighthouse in Istria and is located near Cape Kamenjak close to Pula. The lighthouse was built in 1833, but the island is considerably older, with ancient remains. In winter, the lighthouse has to battle stormy waves. Several shipwrecks near the island bear witness to how dangerous the local storms can be. This raises the question: How was the lighthouse built? We will probably never know.
